While Matt Campagna and I were in LA last weekend we had the opportunity to meet up with The Bui Brothers for a photoshoot. Now, if you don’t know who the Bui Brothers are (there are two Buis, btw. Lan and Vu), I would best describe them as THE photographers of the new media scene. They are quite effortlessly making a name for themselves as the Annie Leibovitz for the stars of the Web. And when I say effortlessly, I don’t mean they don’t hustle their arses because these brothers put an amazing amount of blood, sweat and tears into their work; they’re at all the events and schmooze with everyone and anyone to promote the Bui Brothers brand. I say effortlessly because if you see what they produce, the artistry and story behind each of the photos, the product sells itself. They have an incredible eye for lighting, colour, story and bring out the best in their subjects.
I first worked with the Buis when I was in Pasadena in January for our BSGcast event (for the premiere of season 4.5 of Battlestar Galactica). I approached Lan (admittedly in a bit of an alcohol-induced haze, tee hee) to implore him to do some headshots for me after I fell in love with the brothers’ work on the stunning new media producer and host, Neha Tiwari’s photos. Lan graciously accepted my request and he, Vu and their HILARIOUS other photographer friend Aaron Dieppa (also a very talented photographer! How are they all in LA?!) produced a series of fabulous shots for me that I have fallen madly in love with (yes, I know that sounds narcissistic…). They’re actually the photos I have featured on my website.
THIS time around, Matt and I got together with the Buis to do a fun “couple” shoot with a bit of a retro Bonnie & Clyde theme; we like to call it “Natural Born Old Media Killers” (even though we’re not REALLY passionate haters of the old media model…we just like to turn it on its head whenever we can. And, the name sounds RAD!). The results so far have blown both of us away and I can’t WAIT to share them with you. However, until Lan and Vu get the chance to talk about it themselves on their website, I don’t want to ruin the unveiling:)
And so, in the meantime, if you want to get a sense of what working with the Bui Brothers is like (and, no word of a lie, they are a RIOT to work with and give excellent direction. SO chill and they make you very comfortable in your skin) you can check out some of our hijinks from our Pasadena photoshoot!
